Visiting the D-Day Beaches in Normandy: Practical Guide

Omaha Beach, Utah Beach, Sainte-Mère-Église — 1h15 from the bay

1h10-1h20 from Domaine des Figuiers, the D-Day landing beaches of Normandy are among the most moving historic sites in the world. On 6 June 1944, the Allied Forces landed on these beaches to liberate Europe. Visiting these sites of remembrance from the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel is a profoundly powerful day.

Utah Beach and Omaha Beach

Utah Beach in the Manche and Omaha Beach in Calvados are the two most visited American beaches. Utah was the least costly landing; Omaha, nicknamed 'Bloody Omaha', saw fighting of extreme violence. Their respective museums recount with precision and emotion the decisive hours of 6 June 1944.

Pointe du Hoc and the American Cemetery

Pointe du Hoc, with its bunkers and shell craters still visible today, testifies to the intensity of the fighting. The American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, with its 9,388 white crosses facing the sea, is one of the most solemn sites in Normandy. A moment of reflection that stays with you forever.

Memorials and museums

The Mémorial de Caen offers a complete historical perspective on World War II. In Sainte-Mère-Église, the Airborne Museum tells the story of American paratroopers, with the famous mannequin of the parachutist caught on the church steeple. Essential for understanding the full scale of Operation Overlord.

Historical reenactment camps are set up across the region — in Carentan, Sainte-Mère-Église, Bayeux, Arromanches and on the beaches themselves. Thousands of enthusiasts in period uniforms recreate the atmosphere of June 1944 with remarkable precision: American soldiers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne, GIs from infantry divisions, British and Canadian troops. Bivouacs, radio equipment, field kitchens and military tents faithfully recreate the living conditions of Allied soldiers.

Parades of vintage military vehicles travel the roads of Normandy: Willys jeeps, half-tracks, Sherman tanks, GMC 2½-ton trucks, motorcycles... These colourful convoys pass through Norman villages to the sound of 1940s music, welcomed by locals in period dress. The official June 6th ceremonies bring together thousands of visitors from around the world as well as heads of state, in tribute to the soldiers who fell for freedom — a profoundly moving experience that gives the D-Day beaches an extraordinary dimension.
